behaviour change

eh, have been labouring over an assignment that isn't due for another 2 months but i still try. and i seriously can throw so many hissy fits over the damn project.

labeled, the behavioural change project, it aims to get us to change a bad habit into a good habit, or develop a good habit, and there are various, MEASUREABLE variables that we need to consider. then we need to consider why it worked, hasn't worked, what would improve it and so on.

so its 'one of those' projects. the kind ur just like: this is so shit. why the hell? who's the idiot who made me do this?

eh. but in actual fact, i'm more in the state of denial. i just don't want to change that behaviour (junk food binging) i do it often, but i just don't want to change it. i feel like shit and have constant nausea after it but i still do it.

it also hit me that this is one of those better exercises to make medical students do. why? bc this shows u just how difficult it really is to change a behaviour. how easy would it be for us in the future to go to a patient...u should stop smoking. well here we are trying to do it ourselves and i failed within reading the first 2 lines of the instruction sheet.

i wonder if in the future i should tell patients they need an assignment like this one?? using the smoking idea again, can i go: alright, i need a baseline of how many times u smoke. then i need u to figure out what stimulates to go smoke (ie stress, the enjoyment?), what would counteract these stimulants, what has prevented u from getting there in the first place? what do u need to make it acheiveable? let's give u a reward plan shall we? if u don't stick to ur 1 cigarette a day, then u don't get 10% of ur salary. yep. that stays right here until u get to ur goal.

man. in truth, as we learn so well last year, if our patient is only in the pre-contemplation stage or contemplation stage, there is no way in hell they will change bc their doctor wants them to. they have to themselves. they have to want to follow a management plan. they have to get into action. they have to, should they fail, keep going at it until they succeed.

sigh. and that's why i am throwing hissy fits at this damn project. i don't want to do it. i've only contemplated changing my junky food hog days. and here they want me in the action stage. blah. being a patient (even if i'm stimulating it in the smallest sense of the word) sucks.
