the year of the dog
hope my calandar on this thing is right, bc if it is, it is the 29th of Jan, otherwise known as VIETNAMESE NEW YEAR'S DAY.
it is the year of the dog. YAY.
anyway, i've had one mega long new year's eve. started w work at 8am that went til 2 30. then rushing off in the POURING RAIN to buy lunch. then RUSHING to hairdressers (don't ask) then rushing to grandma's, then rushing to family friends house then rushing home before 12am.
why? bc we have a tradition. and lately, i've decided i quite like the harmless traditions. i find them, soothing, and gives ppl a sense of belonging. the tradition for viet ppl (i assume most viet ppl who believe in this do this too) is to set up an altar in front of their houses and give thanks to ancestors etc. if u ever want to see it, i guess make friends w a viet person and drive by their house during new year bc it would be rather odd. i often wonder what the neighbours would think if they work up and saw 4 of us standing there. fruits and candles on a table, flowers surrounding them, incense smoke filling the air. watching us pray. it'll be amusing i should think. once i found it rather embarassing. my brother still does now. but i find it heartfulling, and enduring. its nice to have tradition.
another nice tradition? li xi. oh yeah. red packets. in one night, make that 3 hrs, i made $120. what easy work! of course my parents had to folk over abt 5 times that much (bc every kid gets that much so u count the kids). my mother once told me that i continue to receive these red packets til I GET MARRIED. hmmm, if i don't make more money in the future, NO WAY AM I GETTING MARRIED TO GET RID OF THIS EASY MONEY! haha.
anyway,
HAPPY VIET NEW YEAR PPL! HOPE ITS ONE HELL OF A GOOD DOG YEAR!
