happy anniversary
so today marks the 20th wedding anniversairy of my parents.
if i think hard abt it, they've been tog for something like 30 years....but 20 years of marriage....WOW....
i know that the marriage has had some tough times. i'm not sure exactly what has been tough, but mother once told me things were not always peachy. it was always compromise, forgiving, dealing etc etc.
i gave them their present today. my parents were like WHA???? what's going on here??? why is it swakoski? and THEY LOVE THE LITTLE PRETTY BIRDIES....as u would...
hehe they wanted me to return it however, bc they don't think i should spend so much on them...but i'm liking birdy versions of my parents...that if they don't want it...i'll keep it....and still use it for my glory..."so, kim thu, what did u buy ur parents for their anniversary?" "well, these pretty little things"...EAT THAT snobby parents....EAT THAT.
it was awesome....I DO BELIEVE they were touched..
oh, and to nads and paul, my parents express their gratitude for excorting me on that shopping exhibition....i told them the whole story...including ur weird walking ways ;) .... and if anyone else told me to tell parents happy anniversary, they are grateful for ur well wishes...
i will be the first to admit that my version of a fantastic relationship is still very much based on hollywood images....but i am also realistic enough to see that when a relationship works....its bc both parties want it too...really badly....and that when it gets really tough...no one gives up.
i've seen some of the hardships my parents went through w their marriage. IT IS NOTHING compared to what they may have been through when they were younger...and had to escape a country, settle into a new country w nothing but the clothes on their back and a spare pair of jeans (literally, that's all they had). but the fact is, they're still very happy. and there is (as corny as this sounds) true love btw them...and i hope that never ends....
the best thing abt my parents' marriage is that it has shown me what a relationship is capable of. and being the selfish person that i am, i wouldn't settle for anything less. to me, nobody should. if u want a relationship, then the sort of relationship my parents have, is what everyone should be aiming for. that and perhaps a little bit more.
i want to say the cliche thing and say, if i reach my 20th wedding anniverary w my marriage still in good tact like theirs is, then i'll consider myself very very lucky. the thing is, like my parents told me once....each generation should be better off than the last...as u always work towards a better future....so i'm going to be wanting, expecting a little bit more...
that may be very naive of me. that could be very wrong w me. but the truth is that it is very possible....and if there's only one thing i was allowed to succeed in for my whole life, i would chose that my marriage and my family are happy. that things are great. that things are nice and rosy.
i am a romantic at heart. not the over the board ones, hero saves his girl, lives happier ever after. the stories that i love, are the ones where the greatest flaws in a person is accepted by their "other half" and it is through the love they share for each other, that the flaws start to disappear. as unromantic as the notion is, the key to a good relationship, as i see it w my parents, is compromise - and it can't be just any compromise..compromise for both sides and compromises that neither side will feel cheated by, or angry towards.
and that, my dear friends, finding the means to give such compromises...will be one of our greater struggles.
HAPPY 20TH ANNIVERSARY to my wonderful parents - who have set such a wonderful example for me.
may their lives continue together for another 20, 30, 50......100 years in happiness.
